How to Use NFC on iPhone
Step 1: Check Compatibility
Most iPhones from iPhone 7 and newer support NFC.
- iPhone XS and newer support automatic scanning (no app needed)
- iPhone 7 to iPhone X may require a third-party NFC app
Step 2: Scan an NFC Tag
For iPhone XS and newer:
- Unlock your phone
- Hold the top edge of your iPhone near the NFC tag
- A notification will appear if the tag contains data (like a link or contact)
Step 3: Use the Shortcuts App (for custom actions)
To set up automation when tapping an NFC tag:
- Open the Shortcuts app
- Go to the Automation tab
- Tap + and choose Create Personal Automation
- Select NFC and scan your tag
- Choose the action (e.g., play music, open an app)
- Tap Next, then Done
Tips
- NFC reader is located at the top of your iPhone
- Make sure your screen is on and unlocked
- For older models (iPhone 7 to X), download an NFC reader from the App Store

NOTE: The NFC chip is embedded on the back of the Vault card.
To activate, flip the card and ensure the back side makes direct contact with your phone’s NFC sensor.
The front of the metal card will not trigger the NFC sensor due to its thickness—flipping the card is required.
